Review: Miller & Lux.

A swanky steakhouse is the latest project from popular TV chef personality, Tyler Florence.

While he already has a successful San Francisco restaurant (Wayfare Tavern), Miller & Lux opened in late 2021 and is at the Chase Center, the home of the Golden State Warriors. As soon as you walk in, you’ll find the bar with a few booths and upstairs is the main dining room where it oozes sophistication. They did a fabulous job with the interior design and embodying modern steakhouse vibes while still feeling cozy yet luxurious.

Typically this isn’t the type of restaurant I would dine at but it was my dad’s birthday and most fine dining restaurants in the city are closed on Mondays. We arrived right when they opened so the dining room was empty but by the time we left, most of the tables were taken. Now since this is a fancy steakhouse, the prices aren’t for the faint of heart and that’s coming from me as someone who dines out often and at upscale restaurants.

Miller & Lux Menu.

I started off with a refreshing and delicious mocktail. So vibrant!

Golden Sunrise: Dhos Bitter Aperitif, Rhubarb Syrup, Lime, and Soda.

The meal started off with a complimentary popover and a cup of their beef consommé (not pictured). The warm popover was airy and light, not heavy at all as it might look like that from the photo.

Complimentary Popover (8-8.5/10).

Winter Canapés (7.5-8/10).

We ordered the winter canapés which consisted of a smoked salmon tea sandwich with cucumber and salmon roe; a crispy celery root and potato rösti; a red wine poached pear tartlet; and a chickpea panisse. The presentation was stunning and my favorites were the rösti and the panisse as they had the most flavor.

Steak Tartare (8-8.5/10).

Next we had their dry aged steak tartare with dijon aioli, capers, and herbs. It was nicely dressed and the accompanying homemade potato chips were very crispy and light, not oily whatsoever. The potato chips were also the perfect thickness and all uniform in color which can be difficult when making them from scratch.

Tableside Caesar Salad.

Their signature caesar salad is prepared table side where they cut the hand harvested lettuce and assemble everything in the bowl.

Miller & Lux Caesar Salad (8/10).

Note that we received two plates of the salad as it’s advertised for two people (we split it amongst four). The dressing had all of the usual fixings and the salad had meyer lemon breadcrumbs which gave a nice aroma. However, I prefer traditional croutons over the breadcrumbs.

Miller & Lux Burger (8/10).

This was a solid burger. The beef patty was a dry aged blend which was topped with melty and luscious Mt. Tam, a local triple cream cheese. It was finished off with onion rings, bacon jam, and peppery watercress. It also came with black truffle parmesan fries (pictured further down) which were tasty but I didn’t get much black truffle flavor.

Tomahawk Ribeye (7.5-8/10).

The main attraction…the tomahawk ribeye. The steak was cooked medium rare and had a nice char on the outside. My biggest complaint was the steak wasn’t very warm but I guess that’s what to be expected when steaks need to rest after cooking so you don’t lose all the juices.

Yukon Gold Potato Purée (9/10), Charred Brassicas (8/10), and Creamed Kale (7/10).

We got various vegetable side dishes and my favorite was easily the rich Yukon gold potato purée with its silky smooth texture and buttery flavor.

Black Truffle Parmesan Fries (8/10) and Sauces for the Steak.

We also picked two sauces to go with the tomahawk ribeye, the red wine bordelaise and tarragon béarnaise which elevated the steak.

The Spread!

Quite a feast!

Enjoying the Tomahawk Bone! 😂

After all the savory food, they bring out the dessert cart which has an array of tantalizing and beautiful desserts.

New York Style “Cheesecake” (8/10).

First up was their take on the classic cheesecake but a much lighter version. The base was a honey graham cracker crust with a meyer lemon filling coated in white chocolate and topped with fresh blueberries. The filling almost felt whipped which resulted in a very airy consistency.

Chocolate Mousse (8/10).

Who doesn’t love a chocolate dessert? This was a chocolate lover’s dream with a chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, and a shiny chocolate glaze.

Blood Orange (7/10).

The last dessert was the blood orange replica with a layer of shortcake with blood orange jelly and chantilly cream all coated in white chocolate. While the presentation is spectacular, it was my least favorite in terms of taste.

Financiers.

To end the meal we had some complimentary financiers, a nice touch.

Birthday Boy!

Miller & Lux is definitely a restaurant for special occasions and the experience overall from the ambience, food, and service was great. The biggest drawback was the price and a few dishes lacked some flavor so my overall rating is a 7.5-8/10.
