Review: Curry Hyuga.

Japanese curry is a comfort food that I grew up eating and this casual restaurant specializes in just that.

Curry Hyuga has a few locations but I visited the San Francisco location to try their famous curry that’s made fresh daily with their blend of spices and caramelized onions. The menu is pretty straightforward with different curry plates as well as a handful of non curry dishes.

Signature Katsu Curry with Chicken Cutlet.

Signature Katsu Curry with Pork Cutlet and Added Karaage.

We both got the signature katsu curry but one with the fried chicken cutlet and the other with the fried pork loin cutlet. Both katsus were nicely fried, crispy without being oily or greasy, and both meats were tender and juicy. Tommaso added kaarage (Japanese fried chicken) to his order which came with some sort of aioli. Each katsu plate comes with white rice and curry, Japanese potato salad, shredded cabbage, and fukujin pickles. The curry was really delicious and tasted authentic with its rich and intense flavor.

Potato Korokke.

I also had to get the potato korokke, another childhood favorite, which was also very tasty. Crispy panko breading with a creamy mashed potato filling.

Considering the large portions and the quality of food, the price was surprisingly very reasonable so my rating is an 8.5/10. For anyone craving authentic Japanese curry, this is the spot!
