Situated outside the hustle and bustle of the city center of Florence, the hilltop Etruscan village of Fiesole provides the perfect day trip for relaxation. Fiesole is only a quick 20 minute bus ride from Piazza San Marco in the city center and offers a spectacular view of Florence from afar, if it’s not too foggy.
The main reason I keep coming back to this charming town is because one of my absolute favorite trattorias is located here, Vinandro. This quaint trattoria not only serves delicious, homemade, and fresh food but it’s also relatively cheap compared to most places within Florence’s city center.
For a trattoria, Vinandro changes their menu quite often compared to most places I’ve tried. They also always have a menu of the day which makes my decision on what to order even more difficult! First, I always get the marinated anchovies with tropea onions as an appetizer. I know, most people are probably thinking “uhhh anchovies, really?” but seriously these are super tasty and not fishy with the perfect balance of acidity from the vinegar and sharpness from the tropea onions. Their pasta dishes are always delicious especially since they make all of their pasta in house! My favorite pasta dish that I tried here was the tagliatelle with Gorgonzola cheese, lardo (cured pork fatback), and black truffle sauce, ammmazzzing! The main courses are also scrumptious and I usually order the meatballs in tomato sauce, peposo (stewed beef), or pork filet. Without a doubt if you come here you must order the fried potatoes as a side dish! Fluffy and light in the middle with the perfect crunchy exterior makes these potatoes addicting. Since I’ve been coming to this trattoria for years now, I’d have to rate them a 7.5-8/10 for serving yummy and affordable food in a casual environment.
There are plenty of cute restaurants within Fiesole but I always seem to find myself back at Vinandro! Perhaps next time I’ll try somewhere else but I keep dreaming about those irresistible fried potatoes…
