Review: Tarts De Feybesse.

While I tried Tarts de Feybesse during their pop-up days, they have now opened a brick and mortar location in Oakland.

For contemporary French pastries and entremets, this is the place to go as they have a gorgeous array. We went on a Saturday morning and the line wasn’t bad at all and the case was entirely full.

Of course we had to get a wide range of goodies to try.

Pain Suisse, Brioche Feuilletée, Ham and Cheese Escargot, Apple Chausson, and Canelé.

All the laminated pastries were very delicious. The pain suisse was stuffed with chocolate chips and pastry cream and the apple chausson had cooked pieces of chopped apples inside the flaky pastry. The brioche feuilletée was somewhat similar in flavor to a butter croissant but the outside had a slight sugar coating which added a subtle sweetness. The ham and cheese escargot was one of my favorite pastries out of the bunch. The only thing I couldn’t recommend was sadly the canelé because the outside crust was overcooked, hard, and way too thick. While the flavor was spot on, the cooking technique needed some work. Perhaps it was a bad batch.

Mango Trompe L’Oeil, Coconut Trompe L’Oeil, Strawberry Financier, Pistachio Éclair, Salted Caramel Éclair, and Opera Cake.

Trompe L’Oeil is a French phrase meaning “trick the eye” which is fitting for these realistic fruit desserts. On this day they had mango, coconut, and lemon and surprisingly the coconut one was my favorite. I thought I would have loved the mango but I wanted more mango flavor to come through while the coconut dessert had a coconut cream as well as young coconut pieces inside which really highlighted the flavor. I love a financier, almond cake, and theirs had a strawberry jam on top (they also had another flavor, calamansi). Both éclairs were delicious, I just wish they were slightly bigger. The opera cake was also beautifully made with layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup with buttercream and chocolate glaze.

Tarts De Feybesse also do cakes and special desserts that you can order in advance perhaps for a special occasion. They really have some stunning desserts that are worth a try so my rating is an 8/10.
