Review: Juniper.

There’s no shortage of fantastic baked goods in San Francisco.

Juniper opened in 2023 and while it doesn’t have the cult following (yet) like some other bakeries in the city, they’re creating some of the most delicious, creative, and technically impressive pastries around.

We went on a weekday and found a short line that moved quickly. I have no idea what it’s like on weekends though. Naturally we had to get a plethora of goodies.

Pain Au Chocolate (8.5-9/10), Cubano Croissant (8-8.5/10), Kimchi Bacon Danish (7/10), Traditional Croissant (8.5-9/10), Black Sesame Kouign Amman (8.5/10), Cinnamon Orange Sticky Bun (8.5/10), Nectarine Apricot Danish (8.5-9/10), and Chocolate Chip Cookie (8/10).

We covered a nice range of sweet and savory pastries though the only thing we skipped were the choux (cream puffs) since Tommaso wasn’t particularly excited about the available flavors. One of their signature pastries is the cubano croissant with mojo pork, ham, Gruyère, pickles, and mustard. It was tasty and worth trying but I’ll forever be a classic ham and cheese croissant kind of girl. Both the traditional butter croissant and pain au chocolat were beautifully executed; crisp, golden layers giving way to soft, buttery interiors. The kimchi bacon danish (Tommaso’s pick) was my least favorite but that’s just my personal preference. The black sesame kouign amann was lovely with a slight nutty flavor. Another highlight was the cinnamon orange sticky bun topped with a salty caramel glaze and pecans. I’m also a sucker for any type of sticky bun. My favorite pastry of the day was their seasonal nectarine and apricot danish with Ricotta cheese as the fresh fruit was just pristine, so fresh and ripe. Something about that juicy, tart sweetness paired with the buttery richness of the pastry just worked perfectly. Lastly, the chocolate chip cookie was solid but I’ve had so many throughout the city that it’s hard to declare a favorite. Juniper is wonderful addition to the city’s bakery scene so my rating is an 8-8.5/10.
