Review: Z & Y Restaurant.

This popular Szechuan restaurant has been around since 2008.

Located in San Francisco’s Chinatown,  Z & Y Restaurant has been on my list for years. I finally went to their newer sister restaurant Z & Y Peking Duck on the same block last year and had a great meal so of course I had to try the OG restaurant. Z & Y Restaurant does have a different menu since it’s main focus is Szechuan cuisine but there is some overlap.

Beef Pancake Roll (8/10).

I love pancake rolls with their flaky dough, tender slices of beef, cucumber, and hoisin sauce. I did think their sister restaurant’s pancake roll was slightly better but this still hit the spot.

Spicy Pork Dumplings (7.5-8/10).

These were solid plump pork dumplings with a chili oil sauce. Simple but delicious.

Chicken with Explosive Chili Pepper (8.5/10).

One of their signature dishes is the fried chicken with tons of chili pepper, definitely a Szechuan dish. The chicken pieces were extremely crispy and the chili pepper wasn’t necessarily crazy spicy but had a nice aroma. The Sichuan peppercorns have a super distinctive flavor and does have that mouth tingling sensation that some people might not enjoy.

Mu-Shu Pork (7.5-8/10).

Lastly we got the mu-shu pork that comes with hoisin sauce and wraps. The dish consists of thinly sliced pork with vegetables that are supposed to be put inside the thin Chinese wrappers.

Z & Y Restaurant is a staple and for good reason with lots of Chinese classics along with Szechuan dishes. While I do like their sister restaurant a little more,  Z & Y Restaurant is still worth checking out and my rating is a 7.5-8/10.
