With various pan pizzas taking over the city, Cellarmaker House of Pizza has been on my radar for some time now.
They actually started off as a small brewery producing beers in small batches in San Francisco and have now expanded to Berkeley and Oakland. Now they have a robust list of beers on tap and what better food to accompany beer than pizza! We visited their original location in the city and it’s a very casual spot.
Inside Cellarmaker House of Pizza.
We went on the earlier side and by the time we left there were a fair amount of people.
Chips & Dip (7.5-8/10).
These house fried potato chips were fresh with a good crunch and served with a whipped goat cheese dip with chives. A solid snack to start off with.
House Caesar Salad (7/10).
Caesar salad is easily one of my favorite salads but I find that they are always slightly underdressed, probably due to the thicker dressing. I loved the fine grating of Grana Padano cheese on top but once again, another restaurant is doing breadcrumbs instead of croutons. I’ll forever be on team croutons.
Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders (8/10).
While these fried chicken sliders were a little too spicy for Tommaso, they were executed pretty well. The chicken was juicy while maintaining that crispy exterior, the cabbage slaw and pickles added some crunch and freshness, and the brioche bun was soft and pillowy.
While Cellarmaker House of Pizza is known for their Detroit style pizzas, they also have something called a bar pizza that looked like a normal thin crust style pizza. We decided to get Detroit style pizzas since that’s their speciality.
Classic Pepperoni (8-8.5/10).
Of course we always need to try a classic pepperoni with tomato sauce and got some hot honey and ranch on the side. The dough was crunchy on the bottom and sides while the interior was soft and they had a good ratio of sauce and toppings.
Asparagusta Rhymes (7/10).
We also got a vegetarian pizza since my dad prefers that and this had asparagus, preserved meyer lemon, green garlic, and Feta cheese. It definitely gave spring vibes with the asparagus, lemon, and various fresh herbs but nothing can beat a classic pepperoni pizza in my books.
The only other place I’ve tried Detroit style pizza is Square Pie Guys, a favorite of ours, and it’s hard to say which pizza is better. Square Pie Guys does have a thick cheesy crust around the perimeter of the pizza which I really enjoy but both places serve craveable Detroit style pizzas. Overall, I’d give Cellarmaker House of Pizza a 7.5-8/10.
