Review: The Morris.

Another restaurant opening in San Francisco, what’s new?!

I’ve been eager to try The Morris since my old coworker currently works there and I’m always interested in new openings in the city (they just opened about two weeks ago). The restaurant is quaint and cozy with a tiny open kitchen and serves New American/Californian cuisine.

We started off with a few “nibbles”, as they call it, to get our appetite flowing.

Shrimp Toast with Avocado and Tomato (8.5/10).

This shrimp toast was on point. Super crunchy chewy bread piled high with chopped up shrimp and tons of avocado (they weren’t skimpy with the avocado) and juicy sweet cherry tomatoes. Delicious.

Chicken and Foie Gras Dumplings (8/10).

These chicken dumplings were warm balls of comfort with a slight aftertaste of rich foie gras swimming in a chicken broth topped with bonito flakes.

Trout Crudo with Radish and Plum (7/10).

The trout crudo itself was amazing but I felt like the sweetness of the fresh plum slices as well as the plum vinaigrette slightly overpowered the delicateness of the fish. I would have liked a little more acidity or heat to the dish to counteract the sweetness of the dressing.

Crab Porridge with Lemongrass (8.5/10).

This was one of my favorite dishes of the night. Super creamy rich porridge flavored with lemongrass, lime, and rau răm (Vietnamese coriander or mint) with shredded pieces of sweet crab topped with pickled raw slices of carrot and tempura fried pieces of crab and rau răm. Extremely satisfying.

Blistered Wax Beans with Monterey Bay Squid and Lime (7.5/10).

The wax beans and squid exploded with flavor. Salty, spicy, acidic, but in a good way. The funkiness of the fish sauce was delicious with the tender squid, mint, and chilies.

Smoked Pekin Duck with Roasted Vegetables (8/10).

The half roasted pekin duck was pretty freakin’ delicious. The duck itself had that lovely smoky flavor with tender meat and crispy skin with a coffee jus served on the side. I loved all the various roasted vegetables such as brussels sprouts, fennel, carrots, turnips, and broccolini.

Pomme Rösti with the Duck (8.5/10).

I’m a sucker for anything with potatoes and these pomme rösti were wonderfully crispy on the outside with a fluffy interior. Can’t go wrong with fancy potato pancakes.

Buckwheat doughnuts with Whisky Crème Anglaise (8/10).

We ended the meal with a bang, some bomb ass donuts. Airy light donuts dusted in cinnamon sugar with a boozy dipping sauce, what’s not to like?!

For only being open for a few weeks, The Morris killed it! The food was super yummy as well as the cocktails and wine we had. Service was on point too and made our overall experience delightful. Therefore, my rating is an 8/10.
