Another popular restaurant in the Mission District in San Francisco is Bar Tartine, just a few blocks away from the famous Tartine Bakery (read my review here).
The food at Bar Tartine is hard to categorize to a single cuisine since their menu has influences from all over the world. Their main focus is showcasing local seasonal produce as well as utilizing their house made fermented and pickled items. For dinner you can either order their prix fixe menu shared family style or order à la carte. Since I wanted the whole Bar Tartine experience, I decided to get the prix fixe menu.
Bar Tartine’s price fix menu is fun and unique but I felt a few dishes fell short in flavor. My favorite dishes of the meal were the cheese dumpling, warm radishes, steak tartare toast, and lamb sausage. Without a doubt the best dish of the night was the farmer’s cheese dumpling; creamy cheese dumpling swimming in a luscious sweet corn sauce with fresh corn kernels. A real winner. Next, a classic dish of radishes with butter was amped up with bottarga (dried mullet roe). The steak tartare toast was super tasty with tonnato sauce (a classic Italian tuna sauce) and dried beef shavings on top. Lastly, the lamb sausage was juicy with tons of aromatics served with smoky grilled cucumbers and spicy padron peppers. One of Bar Tartine’s signature dishes, the smoked potatoes with black garlic, wasn’t on the price fix menu so I definitely need to return to order that.
Overall, I enjoyed most of the dishes at Bar Tartine so my rating is a 7.5/10.
