Hog Island Oyster Co.

Most people know of Hog Island Oyster Company, located in the Ferry Building in San Francisco, for enjoying some of the freshest and tastiest oysters around. However, today Tommaso and I headed up the coast to Marshall, California to their oyster farm for a picnic day.

Hog Island Oyster Company’s oysters are grown in Tomales Bay where cool clean waters give their oysters a delicious outstanding flavor. Their farm has different kinds of oysters including Hog Island sweet waters (in several sizes), Hog Island Atlantics, and Kumamotos. They also have Hog Island Manila clams and Cove mussels if oysters aren’t for you. Here you can watch an episode of Munchies where they show you a tour of the oyster farm!

The picnic area is open for everyone but if you want a table with a grill then you have to reserve it beforehand. I reserved a table with a grill a few days ago because I knew I wanted to cook some of the delicious clams that they offer there and bring some other things to grill.

Perfect Day Out.

Perfect Day Out.

We had a fabulous afternoon in the sun enjoying the beautiful outdoors while savoring fresh oysters. By far the Kumamotos were my favorite; small salty and briny oysters with hints of creamy sweetness, perfection in every way! We also brought some amazing artisanal cheeses and vegetables to put on the grill. Hog Island Oyster Company in Marshall is a serene and beautiful place to visit for a perfect afternoon to relax and eat some superb fresh shellfish.
